WasteWise

A studio collaborative project partnered with Coles’ goal to deliver net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This project covers extensive research into product life cycle analysis, customer experience, and interfacing.

This project designed a refillable grocery system and enhanced Coles’ app to support waste-free shopping, Flybuys-linked sustainability tracking, and smart features like recipe planning, disposal guides, and a fun eco-progress smile tracker.

REIMAGINING

This phase focused on designing an iconic, in-store refill station that could become a staple across all Coles locations. Each store would dedicate a specific area for the station to ensure visibility, accessibility, and high-volume use. To streamline operations, the station would be securely mounted to walls and directly connected to the warehouse, maintaining a consistent and efficient supply chain.

DURABILITY

The refill station's structure was carefully considered for both sustainability and usability. A stainless-steel body offers a food-safe, lightweight, and durable build, while large glass windows provide clear visibility of available goods. Just below the product display, an intuitive control panel integrates a large touchscreen interface, a scanner, and physical buttons. The touchscreen delivers relevant product and refill information through a simple UI and includes voice assistance to support diverse user needs.

INTEGRATION

To initiate a refill, customers can scan their Flybuys card, which automatically logs the product weight and price into their checkout list. For non-members, the station generates a temporary QR code for easy scanning during checkout. Accessibility was a key design consideration: users with vision impairments can activate a dedicated "voice-over" feature, which audibly guides them through each step of the process. Interaction patterns like double-tap confirmations were implemented to reduce errors and support confidence in selection.

SMART INSIGHTS: Breaks down sustainability, nutritional value, and disposal instructions empowers users to make informed, conscious choices. It promotes healthier eating habits, supports environmentally responsible behaviour, and simplifies proper waste disposal - enhancing both personal wellbeing and sustainable living.
